The Ikarus aircraft is built in Germany with the typical German engineered high quality finish. There are currently flying around 1200 Ikarus C42 aircraft worldwide: in the USA and Australia the aircraft is certified under Light Sport Aircraft rules, in South Africa it is classed as a Non Type Certified Aircraft (NTCA). The C42 has many achievements: Winner of World Championship 1997, Winner of German Championship 1996, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004, Holder of FAI-Speed and Distance World Record (for its class).

It was one of a very few Non-Type Certified Aircraft (NTCA) aircraft designed to proper certification standards and the only one currently in South Africa with full UK BCAR Section S certification. TFASA is therefore pleased to be agents for the Ikarus, knowing that the structural integrity of the aircraft is sound, that the handling qualities and stability are excellent, and that the manufacturer has an audited quality assurance process in place for production and support. A proper flight test program during the development process ensured that this is probably the best handling light aircraft of its class in the world today. A full spin program also cleared it for intentional spinning so that students can do proper spin training on the aircraft. Handling qualities conform to FAR23 (as for type certified aircraft) and therefore the aircraft is perfect for PPL and CPL training at a significantly lower operating cost than traditional PPL and CPL trainers such as the Cessna 172 and Piper Warrior.

More detail on the various C42 versions can be found on the manufacturer’s website at:
